The Animal Behavior Coordinator plays a key role in the care of animals at the SPCA of Wake County and is responsible for assessing the behavior modification & enrichment needs for every pet in our care while maintaining and growing a robust behavior program with a proactive approach to ensuring the well-being of the shelter pets. Interdepartmental communication skills are key since this position must be able to help the animal care staff implement the enrichment plans put in place, assist the adoption team in matchmaking and communicating pet needs to potential adopters, collaborate with the intake team about current animal care and behavior capacity, as well as support fosters and volunteers working with SPCA animals. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, meeting & assessing new dogs coming into the adoption program, identifying any necessary behavior modification needs during intake & daily rounds, helping to train the direct care staff & volunteers in safe & fear-free handling, and maintaining current & accurate data in applicable behavior notes. The Behavior Coordinator is expected to participate in weekly Welfare Team & Behavior meetings and host public training classes for community members. The goal of this position is to create & maintain a forward-focused plan to better the lives of the pets in our care, ultimately leading to a shorter (and happier) length of stay, an increase in adoptions, and a decrease in complicated behavior modification cases. This position must also meet departmental & organizational goals.
